Choosing a wreath for your front door

Your front door is a smile on the front of your home, the first glimpse of your personality that guests will receive. Whether you select a bold colour, a subtle shade or a unique design, the final effect should give you a warm welcome every day.

Christmas provides an opportunity to enhance your entrance with a seasonal wreath.

We asked award-winning independent florist, The Flower Lounge, for their tips on choosing a wreath that will give your guests a warm, festive welcome...

Complement your front door colour with a striking wreath

Whether you go for a simple, contemporary choice or a more decorative design, consider how your wreath will complement your front door colour for a cohesive look or a colour highlight.

Sian from The Flower Lounge says: “Always consider the colour of your door when choosing your wreath. The choice of greenery, decoration and ribbon should both complement this but also contrast enough to create interest. Choosing textured foliage will also help it stand out and scented varieties provide a welcome hit of festive spirit; for both you and your guests.”

@stephstafford pairs our dusky pink, Hellebore, with deep bronze and crimson accents. She adds vibrant peacock feathers for an unexpected colour highlight.

@madelaineblogs complements her French Grey door with a natural, contemporary wreath design. She adds textural interest with sprigs of eucalyptus and laurel, and finishes with an elegant velvet ribbon.

Choose a seasonal ribbon for added character

As well as offering a touch of festive charm, ribbons can also be a practical choice.

Sian says: “Little tip: If you don’t have a door knocker or wreath hanger to attach your wreath, position a command hook upside down on the inside of your door and feed the string or ribbon over the top of the door and loop onto the hook to secure.”

A warm clay hue, Silt is a timeless choice for a front door. @houseofbertie uses a classic, pinstripe ribbon that harmonises beautifully with the seasonal red accents in her rustic wreath.

Make a statement with a bespoke wreath design

If you want your front door to have real impact this Christmas, ask your local florist to create a bespoke design for you. A professional florist can handcraft an exquisite piece that elevates your door and mirrors your personality. They can also help you choose greenery that remains pristine throughout December.

Sian suggests: “Keep your wreath looking fresh for as long as possible by selecting foliage that dries out well. Your florist should be able to advise you on this. And be sure to mist daily for a happy wreath right up to the big day.”

Deep greens are a great choice for front doors, as they blend beautifully with their natural surroundings. @the_house_at_no15 chooses Dark Brunswick Green to accompany red brickwork for a bold contrast. A statement wreath by @willowandmaw draws out the jewel-tones in the stained glass.

Consider other elements for a harmonious entrance

Create an inspiring entrance to impress your guests over the Christmas period. For a cohesive feel, try to incorporate all the elements of the space, from the outer porch to the letterbox!

Set against her Boringdon Green front door, @bryonycritchley adds warm pinecone and dried orange accents that pair with her lustrous gold letterbox and door knocker.

If your front door has a spacious porch, a single wreath might feel a little lost. Consider adding Christmas trees or lanterns with ambient lighting for a cosy feeling, perfect for the festive season.

@amanda_louise_homeandgarden pairs her Normandy Grey front door with simple lanterns and Christmas trees for a classic, welcoming entrance.

The fresh green, Eau de Nil, coordinates beautifully with natural foliage in this characterful exterior from @carnabycottage. She adds a traditional wreath for some festive charm.
