Bark c.1961

Throughout its history wallpaper has imitated textured surfaces, but, restricted by printing methods, these imitations were often quite crude. The introduction of screen-printing in the mid-20th century enabled the designer’s marks – whether crayon, brush or sponge - to be faithfully reproduced, as could the surfaces of brick, stone or, as in this case, bark. This paper is a reproduction of an original at the Whitworth Art Gallery and is typical of a design that provided the only decorative effect in many ‘modern’ interiors of the time.
